2003
Installation: 3 c-prints, variable dimensions
3 wooden shelves supporting small stones, (100 x 8 x 12 cm each)
video projection (colour, sound, 12 min)
Clear and present is not simply a video, but a complex project made of photographs, sounds, video and installed objects. Yet, unlikely analogous work, each one of its components could be shown on its own and still retain, at least partly, its original meaning and its evocative potential.
However, all these elements are synthesized in the video installation, that remains Marcella Vanzo’s privileged medium. The image shown is simply that of the head of a girl, little by little we discover it, starting at the nape of her neck, her hair, the screen almost black. The camera stands still whilst the girl’s face slowly rotates until we see her eyes, shut because of the weight of several small stones attached to her eyelashes.
It is the sound that surprises us before seeing this image, shocking and symbolic at the same time.
A prolonged whistle first and then the numerous voices that Marcella collected with a patient research on the web.
These are the voices of statesmen, political leaders, or presidents (many of them easy to recognize), all voices that represent power (even when they are “fighting” it). They highlight our incapacity to relate to them, if not by surrendering to their charm or their aggressiveness.Clear and present is an alert cry and at the same time a criticism and an homage to the world of images that invade our daily life and leave us helpless. Images block our eyes and keep us from seeing or reading the reality around us. A work so rich in references and evocations has been made even more meaningful by the casual coincidence of its first show and the outbreak of the war in Iraq.
